Ritterfeld received her academic training in Germany where she became Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Magdeburg. In 2002 she accepted a position at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Southern California, which she held for 5 years before she joined the Faculty of Psychology and Education of the Vrije Universiteit as professor for Media Psychology in 2007.
